This Italian red wine, produced in the Maremma region of Tuscany, around Scansano, located south from Livorno until the Latium Region. It is primarily made from the Sangiovese grape variety (locally known as “Morellino”), comprising at least 85% of its composition, and a maximum of 15% of other red grape varieties. The wine obtained DOC status in 1978 and was elevated to DOCG status starting with the 2007 vintage.
Tasting notes from:
Corte dei Pazzi Campo Vernino Morellino di Scansano DOCG 2023
It has a bright ruby red color, with a complex fruity bouquet of cherries, strawberries, violets and thyme, wrapped in a spicy texture, with a light touch of earthy nuances. The fruity note of strawberries still resonates on the palate, between balance and lively tannins give the wine great freshness, a far cry from the beauty standards of Bolgheri wines, which are also located by the sea and enjoy a similar climate. This makes Morellino Campo Vernino very appealing and an ideal accompaniment to Trattoria food dishes like Pappardelle al Ragù, Crostinis, Finocchiona charcuterie, Pecorino di Pienza, the original tuscan cheese.
(Trattoria : typical italian restaurant focused in serving traditional regional and home made food)
Of course, the style of wine also depends on the producer, and I sometimes taste more powerful Morellino di Scansano wines. However as there is no shortage of full-bodied alcoholic wines in Italy, I would like to emphasis the importance of still having wines that are easy to drink on a daily basis, because accompanying a meal with a good glass of wineries an integral part of our European gastronomic culture, which is recognised as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO
