In the world of wine, time is the ultimate craftsman. It shapes the character of a vintage, the depth of a vine’s roots, and most importantly, the strength of human partnerships. Today, I am proud to look back on a 20-year journey alongside Finca Viladellops, a domain that is much more than a winery—it is a living piece of Mediterranean history.
A Legacy Reborn in the Massif del Garraf
Located just 45km from Barcelona, Finca Viladellops is situated in the breathtaking landscape of the Massif del Garraf. While the estate’s history dates back to 930 AD, its modern soul was revitalized in 1999 by Marcelo Desvalls.
Marcelo belongs to a lineage that has called this land home for generations. His vision was clear from the start: to produce 100% organic wines that speak of the sea, the wind, and the unique calcareous soils filled with marine fossils.
The Magic of the “Wine Village”
What makes Viladellops truly unique is its status as a “Wine Village.” Walking through its streets feels like stepping back a century. With its 18 perfectly preserved farmhouses, the Romanesque chapel of Saint John, and the ancient stone walls, it is a sanctuary of peace and tradition.
Each visit to the vineyards in the company of Marcelo is an opportunity for a new discovery; the numerous fossils scattered on the soil among the vines, the living vegetation, a testament to a culture respectful of nature, give me a feeling of well-being.
Native Excellence: Xarel·lo and Grenache
Finca Viladellops has been a pioneer in showcasing the potential of indigenous varieties.
- Xarel·lo: Grown in poor, limestone soils, these whites offer a salinity and mineral structure that are world-class.
- Grenache: The red soul of the estate, producing elegant, Mediterranean wines that capture the “Garriga” (scrubland) aromatics.

Our partnership isn’t just about history; it’s about looking forward. Most recently, we stood side-by-side at the Barcelona Wine Week. It was a privilege to represent the estate on such a prestigious stage, sharing our latest vintages with professionals from around the globe. The energy at the stand was a testament to the growing international acclaim for Marcelo’s work.
To work with Marcelo and the Desvalls family for two decades has been an honor. Beyond the technical excellence and the organic certifications, it is the shared meals, the walks through the vines, and the unwavering commitment to quality that define our relationship.
